1. World Bicycle Day:

I. The World Bicycle Day is observed globally on June 3 to recognize the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, as simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.

II. The day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in April 2018.

2. International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

I. Every year on 4 June, The United Nation’s (UN) International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is observed to raise awareness about the children who have suffered a lot throughout the world and are victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse.

II. On this day UN affirms the commitment to protect the rights of children.

3. High Court declares all animals in Haryana to be ‘legal persons’

I. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has accorded the status of “legal person or entity” to all animals in Haryana, granting them the “corresponding rights, duties and liabilities of a living person”.

II. The verdict comes nearly a year after Uttarakhand High Court passed a similar order “to protect and promote greater welfare of animals”.

4. MP Cabinet passes resolution to increase reservation for OBCs to 27 %

I. Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has passed a resolution to increase reservation quota for Other Backward Classes (OBC) from existing 14 per cent to 27 per cent.

II. Madhya Pradesh will become the only state in the country to have a 27 per cent quota for OBCs.

III. The move will lead to reservation in the state breaching the Supreme Court-mandated 50 per cent cap to reach 63 per cent.

5. China, India lead charts for fintech adoption growth

I. Fintech adoption rate has risen to an average of 64 percent this year, with emerging markets like China and India leading the way, according to a report by Ernst & Young (EY).

II. In its report titled ‘Global FinTech Adoption Index 2019’ , EY said emerging markets like China and India (87 percent adoption rate) led the charts, followed by Russia and South Africa (82 percent).

6. Nilekani panel suggests 24×7 RTGS, NEFT, elimination of all charges

I. To encourage digital payments, the Nandan Nilekani committee has suggested a host of measures, including elimination of charges, round the clock RTGS and NEFT facility and duty-free import of point-of-sales machines.

II. The committee, which was appointed by the RBI, had submitted its suggestions on promoting digital payments to Governor Shaktikanta Das

III. The committee had recommended that the Interchange on card payments be reduced by 15 basis points (0.15 per cent) as this will increase the incentive for acquirers to sign up merchants.

IV. The Committee recommends large scale usage of common and interoperable mobility cards by public across different transit options

7. MN Sarma to be new Secretary General of General Insurance Council

I. MN Sarma, the former Chairman & Managing Director (MD) of United India Insurance will be the new Secretary General of the General Insurance Council.

II. 61-year-old Sarma, who retired in May 2018, will take over the new responsibility in August. He will be supported by CR Vijayan, a former director of the GIC Re, who has been selected as the deputy Secretary General of the GI Council.

III. The GI Council was formed in 2001, under an act of the IRDAI has emerged as an important representative and voice for the Rs 1.7 lakh crore Indian general insurance industry.

8. CAG Rajiv Mehrishi chosen External Auditor for WHO

I. Rajiv Mehrishi has been elected as external auditor of the World Health Organization (WHO). He is the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

II. The election was held in the 72nd WHO Assembly in Geneva on May 23 where the CAG was elected with a majority (90 out of 162 votes).

III. Apart from India, others competing for the position were the Auditors General of Congo, France, Ghana, Tunisia and the United Kingdom. He has been elected for a term of four years from 2020 to 2023.

IV. Earlier this year in March 2019 he was also elected for the post of External Auditor of Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome

9. Ajit Doval to continue as NSA for next 5 years, elevated to Cabinet rank

I. Ajit Doval has been appointed as the National Security Adviser (NSA) for a second consecutive term and elevated to the rank of Union Cabinet Minister.

II. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment for a five-year period with effect from May 31, 2019.

III. Doval was in May 2014 appointed as the fifth NSA in the rank of Minister of State. He is the first National Security Adviser to get a second term.

10. Rakesh Kumar Patra finishes seventh in Parellel Bars final at FIG World Cup

I. Indian gymnast Rakesh Kumar Patra finished seventh in the finals of Parallel Bars at the FIG World Cup in Koper, Slovenia.

II. In the final field of eight gymnasts, Patra finished second last with a score of 13.650. Frank Baines of Great Britain clinched the top spot, while Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi settled for the second place and Ilias Georgiou of Cyprus was third.

11. Danilo Petrucci Wins Stunning Italian Grand Prix

I. Ducati’s Danilo Petrucci fought off a stiff challenge from Marc Marquez to win the Italian Grand Prix, his first ever MotoGP victory.

II. Petrucci’s win comes a day after he recorded the highest speed in MotoGP history.Petrucci, an Italian riding for local team Ducati.

III. Five-time MotoGP champion Marquez on a Honda briefly took the lead in the last lap but Petrucci recaptured first place and won.

12. Actor-singer Ruma Guha Thakurta passes away

I. Bengali actor and singer Ruma Guha Thakurta died of old-age related ailments in her Kolkata residence. She was 84.

II. Guha Thakurta is known for her roles in movies such as Ganga, Balika Badhu, and 36 Chowringhee Lane.
